Protocol Interiors & Procurement

The interiors of a state ceremonial building: the reception hall, lounges, meeting spaces, and boardroom in which ministers, commanders, and visiting delegations gather before and after the occasion on the parade ground outside. Within a building designed by DARA Architects, DIUM carried the interior from concept to procurement — surfaces, fittings, and furniture drawn, specified, sourced, and delivered as one package.

An interior of this kind has to carry institutional weight without stiffness. The response is a single material language carried without variation from the entrance to the boardroom, so that the sequence from arrival to audience reads as one interior rather than a corridor of separate designs. The hall rises double-height, the lounges are set within it rather than apart from it, and the light is kept low and warm, so that the building feels occupied even while it waits.

Sequence

The plan is a choreography of protocol: reception, the wait, the audience. The lounges absorb the hours around the ceremony, a formal majlis takes the photographed meetings, and the boardroom takes the working sessions. Mezzanine lounges look down over the hall, and water at the entrance quiets the arrival.

Material

Three materials do the work — stone, timber, and bronze — chosen for how they take light and how they will age in a building that will be photographed for decades. Daylight arrives through the façade’s geometric screens, so the same hall reads differently at noon and at dusk; the spaces were composed for both.

Procurement

Every item in the building was drawn before it was bought. Stone, joinery, lighting, rugs, and loose furniture were specified, sourced, and delivered by the studio under one schedule and one responsibility, so that the spaces opened as they had been drawn.

As Drawn, As Built

The visualisations were issued before construction began. The photographs were taken at handover. What stands between them is the method: a design fixed in drawings early enough that nothing on site was left to interpretation, and procurement held in one hand — every stone, fitting, and piece of furniture specified, sourced, and delivered to the drawing. The building was photographed as it had been drawn. That is not a claim about the renders. It is a claim about the documents.
